Locally produced Arts & Health project for Health & Social Care Professionals this Autumn

17 September 2019

Gods & Kings is a locally written and produce arts project which draws on Paul’s real-life experience to produce an emotionally honest, and darkly funny, account of what it is to live a life ruled by mental illness.

We would like to bring to your attention the opportunity highlight a unique Arts & Health project for Health & Social Care Professionals this Autumn. Four in Four are offering people the chance to engage with an authentic lived experience of receiving a Mental Health diagnosis, through the medium of Theatre.

Following every performance we will be hosting a post-show discussion about the themes raised in the play. To date, confirmed speakers include Services Users, the National Centre for Mental Health (NCMH),Public Health Wales (PHW) and the Mental Health Foundation (MHF).

Following its debut run at the Sherman Theatre in 2017, Four In Four’s critically acclaimed 70 min autobiographical show: 'Gods & Kings’ has been awarded Arts

Council Wales funding to tour Wales in October / November 2019; in partnership with Riverfront Arts and supported by The National Centre for Mental Health (NCMH).

Gods & Kings - a Four in Four Theatre Production & Patient Experience

At the age of 23, Paul walks into a doctor’s surgery believing he is either a God, or a King. He leaves with a diagnosis of Bipolar Manic Depression, and facing a life changing decision: It should be a pretty  straightforward choice. Take the pill and live. Don’t take the pill and die. But the decision proves to be more difficult; does he risk losing his life or risk no longer being the person he has been all of his life?

23 years later; Gods & Kings draws on Paul’s real-life experience to produce an emotionally honest, and darkly funny, account of what it is to live a life ruled by mental illness.

Starring award-winning actor Robert Bowman, Gods and Kings has already enjoyed a successful run at Cardiff’s Sherman Theatre. Audiences hailed the performance as a thought provoking, humorous, powerful, emotional and riveting portrayal of mental illness.

‘I found it to be a thought provoking, powerful, emotional and riveting portrayal of mental illness with the right amount of humour to lift what could have been an otherwise dark evening of entertainment. Having worked in the NHS for over twenty years including a number of years associated with mental health care it was all disturbingly familiar.’

In addition to the tour, ‘Gods & Kings’ is being published by Oberon Books. It will also include a second section that is based on Arts, Health and Science. This contains additional research material from NCMH.

To support our audiences and ensure Duty of Care to all, Four in Four has created a Duty of Care ‘Mental Health Access Guidelines’ document and are providing staff training for venues. We are also displaying national and local mental health resources in the foyer and on our website.
