Responsible to Practice Manager
The candidate is required to be flexible in terms of additional work, and will be required to work at both main and branch surgeries.
Working under the direct supervision of the Senior Practice Nurse and strictly in accordance with specific Practice guidelines and protocols, the Healthcare Assistant will assist the Practice clinical team in the provision and delivery of prescribed programmes of patient care. Essential skills required are:-
Health Care Assistant, Duties and Responsibilities
Clinical
- Recording ECG’s
- Phlebotomy
- Spirometry
- Assisting with the collection and collation of data on needs related to health and well being ie BP, height, weight, smoking status, alcohol intake, activity levels and diet.
- Helping to raise awareness of health and well being and how it can be promoted.
- Simple wound dressings as directed by the Practice Nurses.
- Simple suture removal
- B12 injections according to a PSD
- Influenza immunisations according to a PSD
- INR clinic- use of coaguchek machine and call and recall of patients.
- Assisting GP at coil and implant clinics. Maintaining the waiting list, booking patients and ordering of the required stock.
- Chaperoning duties
Administrative
- QIF call and recall of patients
- Stock ordering and rotation
- Clearing and re-stocking consulting rooms
- Assisting with the management of hazardous waste and compliance with related protocols and procedures.
- Monthly risk assessments of clinical areas
- Input of cervical smear results and recall dates in patient’s records and maintenance of the smear log.
- Vaccine cold chain monitoring and recording
- Ensuring patients return for coil checks following insertion of a coil
- Ensuring histology results following minor-ops have been received.

- Excellent communication skills with the ability to deal with people in a sensitive and confidential manner.
- Good level of accurate literacy and numeracy skills
- Sound ability in the use of computer systems with good keyboard skills
- Creative nature and a willingness to solve problems.
